AI Addiction & Generation Z

Generation Z is the first generation to grow up surrounded by advanced technology, including artificial intelligence. While AI has undoubtedly brought about countless benefits, there is also growing concern regarding the impact of AI addiction on young people.

By GenZ we mean the generation born between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s. Studies have found that excessive and uncontrolled use of gadgets, such as smartphones and tablets, among members of Generation Z has resulted in symptoms of addiction to

Historians of science and emotion have established that scientists’ emotional responses to their subject of study can influence the generation of scientific models, concepts and data.

Likewise, the over-reliance on AI has the potential to negatively impact the mental well-being of Generation Z, leading to addiction-like behaviors that may adversely affect their social skills and overall health. Studies by M. Ozkan and B. Solmaz analyze the impact of mobile addiction on the social and personal life of Generation Z, highlighting the need for further research into the effects of AI addiction.Z. Tufekci shared a similar concern that the advanced AI employed by platforms such as YouTube may contribute to addiction-like behaviors through increased view time (Yang et al., 2021) (Blasco et al., 2020)

Similarly, with the increasing reliance on technology among Generation Z, their emotions and psychology can be impacted. Research conducted by UCSD suggests that excessive and uncontrolled use of gadgets and social media can lead to addiction-like symptoms. Society must take a proactive approach to addressing the potential negative impacts of AI addiction on Generation Z (The Pros And Cons Of Artificial Intelligence – Forbes, n.d)

How can we identify symptoms of AI Addiction

To identify potential symptoms of AI addiction, experts have developed a standardized Addiction Severity Score. This score uses various factors, including compulsive behavior, withdrawal symptoms, and negative impacts on daily life to determine the level of addiction. While specific symptoms may vary, common indications of AI addiction can include spending excessive amounts of time online or on electronic devices, neglecting other responsibilities such as work or school, difficulty reducing the amount of time spent on technology, and experiencing negative emotions such as anxiety or depression when not using devices. It is crucial to identify and address symptoms of AI addiction as early as possible, in order to prevent negative impacts on the well-being of Generation Z.

Withdrawal Symptoms of AI Addiction

Withdrawal symptoms of AI addiction may include feelings of restlessness, irritability or agitation when not using devices, decreased ability to concentrate or focus on tasks, and experiencing anxiety or depression. Other potential withdrawal symptoms of AI addiction may include physical effects such as headaches or fatigue, and an increased desire to use electronic devices. It is essential to recognize the potential impacts of AI addiction on Generation Z and address symptoms early to prevent long-term negative effects.

Residential Treatment Programs for AI Addiction

While it is a relatively new concept, some residential treatment programs are now available that focus on addressing AI addiction in individuals. These programs provide a supportive environment for individuals to learn how to manage their addiction and develop healthier habits around the use of AI. The treatment typically involves a combination of therapy, counseling, and education about the impact of AI on mental health and well-being. The goal of these programs is to help individuals regain control of their lives and improve their overall quality of life. Additionally, these programs may provide support for families and loved ones impacted by the individual’s addiction to AI.

These programs offer a structured approach to tackling AI addiction by providing a supportive environment for individuals to develop healthy habits and break free from harmful behaviors related to excessive AI usage. With the increasing prevalence of AI in our daily lives, it is important for individuals to learn how to manage their usage and maintain a healthy balance. The emergence of residential treatment programs for AI addiction is a positive step forward in addressing this growing concern and providing individuals with the support they need to lead fulfilling and balanced lives.
